The name Verbena is a Roman classical name for “altar-plants” and was used on alters by the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. The druids used vervain in their magical rites, and the Celts used it religiously and as medicine, and it has been used across different traditions as a form spiritual protection, even carried by soldiers going into war. By the 16th century, it had become the “official” herb of English apothecaries and was used to treat over 30 ailments.
